Water is one of the basic needs of life. Every life, from plants to animals to human being, every living being needs water to survive. There would be no life without water. While we know plenty of reasons why we should drink more water or what are the benefits of drinking water, it is also necessary to understand, What, are water borne diseases? And why purification is important to convert normal water to Drinking Water. Water borne diseases are caused mainly because of drinking unpurified or contaminated water, though there are number of diseases that can spread through water, few of them are, Amoebiasis, Diarrhoea & Dysentery, Cholera, Typhoid etc. Though these diseases can cause serious health issues (sometimes can be fatal), but cleaning or purifying the water can help us to stay healthy. Let’s check on, few vital things on water purification.
1. Why water purification is necessary?
Our planet is covered with 71 percent of water, but we cannot drink all the water available of the earth. While the ocean water contain of salinity, much more amount of water is in the form of Ice, in the polar regions of our planet. Even then, we have other sources of water which are drinkable, like river and stream water, underground water, lakes and ponds, icebergs, glaciers etc. Though there is plenty of water for survival of the human beings and other living organisms, they are not pure enough to consume, they contain impurities, dirt, bacteria, viruses, and other harmful microorganism that needs to go through Purification in order to drink it.
2. Health benefits of drinking purified water.
Water helps in many important body functions including absorption, digestion, maintaining body temperature, hydration, production of saliva and most importantly carrying nutrients to the cells. Therefore, it is important to supply our body with pure, bacteria free and other disease free water. Few benefits are-
Helps in proper digestion of the food.
Helps in absorption of nutrients.
Improves proper circulation.
Reduction of potential allergens, that can be found in tap water, including heavy metals, harmful chemicals and other contaminants.
Also fights many toxins, that are found in regular drinking water.
Now that we understand how much purification of the water is important let’s check few methods how water is purified and how we can easily purify water at home with simply ways.
3. Home water purification methods.
The most reliable and traditional way to purify water is by boiling it. Boil the water for few minutes, cover it and wait till it reaches to the room temperature before drinking. If needed then filter the boiling water to remove any debris or other solid particles.
Water filter is the most used method of every house hold to purify the tap water. Basically filtration removes the impurities, harmful chemical, heavy metals, bacteria and other pollutants from the water to make it drinkable. Few types of water filter used are:
Carbon filter (Activated carbon)
Reverse Osmosis (RO)

Chlorine tablets and drops
Use of chlorine tablets or drops to purify water, is one the method used from a long time. They have the ability to kill the harmful bacteria in water, and are easily available. Add required numbers of tablets to certain amount of water and wait for an hour before drinking it. Make sure you don’t use too many tablets and always consult your doctor before any changes to your diet and drink.
These water purifying tablets are effective, convenient as well as affordable. Iodine tablet kills maximum water borne bacteria and viruses. Just add the tablets to the water and wait for 30 to 45 minutes before drinking it. Iodine tablets can purify warm water faster than the cold one, taste of the water may vary but it is easy to carry with you wherever you go. Make sure of know how to use the tablets.
Water pasteurization is lesser known method to be used in daily households. This is an old method, where direct sun heat, is used to purify the water, or you can also use a solar cooker. The temperature needed is less than that of boiling, and is believed that most of the harmful bacteria are destroyed.
4. Factory water purification methods
While we use different ways to purify water at home including above methods, factories use high, advanced technologies to purify the water and pack them for us. Different source of water are treated differently to purify, for example underground water, which are extracted by wells and borewells contain bacteria and other chemicals, so needed to be treated in a certain way, in other hand, river water contain abundant bacteria, algae and other harmful microorganisms, so needs to treated differently. Though the water treatment may vary for different source of water available but few basic steps are,
5. Purified water vs other drinking water
Other than purified water, other drinkable water includes,
Spring water- is found from the natural spring, then go through few filtration process, before making it drinkable.
Distilled water- water is boiled in higher temperature, till steam results from the boiling, it is then stored and cooled, the water that is collected from the steam is known as distilled water.
Filtered water- the water goes through carbon activators to filter it improving the taste and removing chlorine and other few elements.
Tap water- the normal water, used in every house hold, though it contains few harmful elements and chemicals, still used as drinking water in many places of the earth.
While it is not necessary to purify spring water, distilled water and even the filtered water, but always purify tap water before drinking.
